HR for Non-HR Managers: Handle People Issues Right the First Time
Participants learn the essentials of hiring, performance, discipline and leave. They leave with a manager's checklist for each, and clear rules for when to involve HR.
Skills you can use back at work
Why teams need this
Line managers hire, set goals, give feedback, approve leave and deal with discipline, usually with no HR training. Small issues, like a late-arriving employee or an unclear warning, become HR cases. Gallup says "most companies promote workers into managerial positions because of tenure or performance, rather than talent".
Hire on evidence
e.g., use a short list of structured questions and a scoring sheet
Set and review performance
e.g., one clear goal per person, with a monthly check-in
Handle early discipline issues properly
e.g., a documented conversation and a clear next step before a formal warning
Handle leave requests and basic entitlements
e.g., know the statutory leave days and when to check with HR
Built around your real work, not generic demos
Exercises use your policies, forms and the typical issues your managers face. This course is not legal advice.
Managers matter
Gallup reports managers account for "at least 70% of the variance in employee engagement scores across business units".
Law in plain language
Participants learn the basics from Malaysian sources, such as the statutory leave entitlements (annual leave of 8, 12 or 16 days by service length, sick leave of 14, 18 or 22 days, and up to 60 days hospitalisation leave), and that dismissed employees have only 60 days to file a claim with the Director General of Industrial Relations.
Tools from other courses
Structured interviewing, goal-setting and the SBI feedback model are used, so each manager leaves with a working toolkit.
Group work and role-play
Teams sort real people issues into "handle myself", "ask HR" and "escalate now". Then they role-play a first conversation with an employee whose attendance has slipped.
