Sales Call Management: Lead the Call, Don't Just Attend It

Participants learn to plan a call, open with a clear purpose, ask questions that uncover real problems, and close with a specific next step. They leave with a call planner and a self-review checklist.

Key Outcomes
Plan every call around one clear objective
e.g., "by the end, agree who else must be in the next meeting"
Open with purpose and agree the agenda
e.g., "I'd like to use 20 minutes to understand X, then suggest what makes sense next. Is that fine?"
Ask questions that surface problems and their cost
e.g., move from "How many reps do you have?" to "What happens when follow-ups are late?"
Close with a dated next step
e.g., "Shall we book Thursday 3pm with your finance lead?"

Why teams need this

Many sales calls drift. The salesperson talks about the product, the buyer is polite, and the call ends with "we'll get back to you". Nobody agreed what the call was for, and nobody owns the next step. The result is a pipeline full of conversations rather than deals.

SPIN Selling
Based on Neil Rackham's research, with a team of 30 researchers studying 35,000 sales calls over 12 years in more than 20 countries. Its question types are Situation, Problem, Implication and Need-payoff. Rackham himself says the results came from "the whole coaching process", not just "the four little questions", so participants practise calls and get feedback.
Self-review habit
Participants score their own calls against a simple checklist (objective, agenda, questions asked, next step agreed) so improvement continues after the course.
Group work and role-play
Teams plan one call together, then role-play it with a buyer who stays vague. Observers note whether the salesperson led the call or just attended it.

Exercises use your sales process, your usual call types (discovery, follow-up, proposal review) and real buyer situations.
